Journal #3Perspective: Mr. Avery

Every time I fall asleep I dream about that night and why im stuck here in bed. Im so glad I survived and I hope I can change my life around so next time when I am dying, I can say that I lived my life how I wanted.

Miss. Maudie kept a fire going last night in the kitchen for her potted plants. I guess something else caught on fire because before I could fully become awake, I heard the firemen of our town shouting. As I was trying to wake up I wondered what it was like to die. I wasn’t pleased with how my life turned out. I wish I could have done more and made more friends. If I died, who would come to my funeral? All these thoughts disappeared into the smoke when I realized I took to long getting dressed and I was stuck. I peered out the window to see if maybe I could jump and survive. The stairs fell apart and I knew jumping was the only way to get out of the house. I pushed my mattress out the window and after making sure it landed in the right spot, I jumped. I got stuck for a minute and I could see everyone’s scared faces. I wondered if I would see everyone again or hear the children laugh. I may be a grumpy old man but long ago I wasn’t like this.

Journal #1 perspective: scout

Dill left the other day to go back to meridian. I wasn’t at all happy but then I realized that in one short week I would be joining Jem at school. Almost everyday I would watch them and hear their laughs from the school grounds and wonder what it would be like to be part of them and share jokes and play games. Now, I don’t need to wonder because I would be there; part of them.

Jem took me to school today and showed me where I was supposed to go. I think Atticus paid him because when we were walking I heard the strange noise of coins bouncing in Jem’s pockets. Jem said I couldn’t go up to him during to school and do the things we would do at home. That truly disappointed me because I thought I could be with Jem all the time. But I guess now I need remember that he has his own friends and he doesn’t want to be seen with me. Later when I was in class, Miss Caroline scolded me. She thought I was lying when I said Atticus was teaching me how to read. She wanted him to stop because it was “interfering with my learning at school.” It’s all Calpurnia’s fault. Whenever I'm in the kitchen and I'm bothering her, shell sit me down and have me copy a verse out of the bible or write out the alphabet. I don’t think I like Miss Caroline that much because she accused me of something I didn’t do. Later at lunch Walter Cunninghams didn’t have lunch and I had to explain to Miss Caroline that he was a Cunningham. She said she had heard enough out of me and then gave me a slap on my hand. That frustrated me so much I ran after Walter at school and shoved his face in the dirt. I'm glad Jem stopped me because I was about to go crazy.

At first I was confused on what had happened in a couple sentences. Josie was on the stand and she said something that made the book take a turn. I had to ask my sister, who also read the book, to explain it to me. It then became clear to me that Josie had shot Matt instead of Peter.
I think the theme of this book was to be careful of how you act towards others because everything can go wrong in nineteen minutes.

What has surprised you in the book? Why?
I was surprised on how he could shoot Matt in front of Josie. If he was truly her friend, he wouldn't let her see something like that. I wonder if Josie actually didn't remember what happened.

What character do you like most in this book and/or what character do you like least? Why? I like Matt the least. I think he is conceited and thinks hes above everyone and everything. I also think teasing and beating Peter up since kindergarten is horrible. What Peter did is terrifying, but its hard to blame him for shooting Matt.

QUESTION 1:What advice would you give to a particular character? Why?

RESPONSE 1: I would tell Josie that even though she might be out of the ''in group'' she should stand up for peter like she used to when they were little. She may not havephysically been mean to peter, but she is just like Matt and his friends who torture him everyday. Boyfriends come and go but when they leave behind pieces of your heart, your friends are the one who picks it all up.

QUESTION 2: Do you think you would read another book by this author? Why or why not?
RESPONSE 2: This is my second book by Jodi Picoult that I have read. I think she is a great author and if I come across another one of her books I would read it. Her books are full of suspense and I can't wait to get to the end.

book choice!

I want to read 19 minuets by Jodi P. I read another book by her, My Sister's Keeper and I enjoyed it very much. She's a great writer and I'm interested in other books she wrote.
